This is the third time I've bought and read this book, and it just keeps getting better. I'm not entirely sure I buy into the archetypes 100% (I attended a seminar when the first edition came out and thought Vogler had to struggle making the movie fit the paradigm), but it provokes thought, adds insight and depth to the reading experience, and is a classic in helping writers along a journey none of us really understands. Vogler puts complex through and the structure of mythology in prose that's easy to understand a motivating, at least until we splat against a wall and go looking for more answers to yet more questions about writing.
This book, along with James N. Frey's The Key: How to Write Damn Good Fiction Using the Power of Myth, helped me get out of the doldrums as I contemplated draft 4 of my first novel. Although I had pretty much worked out the plot bugs by the end of draft 3, the manuscript still seemed limp and the characterization uneven. I knew I needed a fresh take on my characters and their basic predicament -- The Writer's Journey helped me see that I already had all the elements of a great tale, but just needed to use them to better advantage.I re-mapped the entire story using ideas from this book and could feel the characters and plot taking on new life as I created a new outline. Half-way through draft 4 (rewritten from scratch), I feel much more in command of my story and in love with my characters. The individual scenes fit together in a way that they hadn't in previous versions, partly because some got moved in order to create better motivation and partly because I can now see better what role secondary characters play in the story over all.I would certainly recommend this book as a tool for revitalizing a manuscript that has gone stale or gotten bogged down in the middle.
I bought a copy of this book years ago, when it was a new concept and copies were only available at writer's conferences. I loved that book, re-read it regularly, loaned it to others, and nearly wore out my copy.This edition is at least three times the size, and even more overloaded with useful information for fiction writers, and some nonfiction writers. (Biographies and personal stories could benefit from the insights in this book.)This book pioneered the "hero's journey" as a plotting template, based on Joseph Campbell's study of mythology and archetypes.However, this edition of the book takes readers (and fellow writers) far beyond the hero's journey concepts. In fact, this book is tremendously useful for all fiction writers, not just those following the "hero's journey" plot structure. (In other words, it will work with the three-act model, Aristotle's incline, and so on.)For example, there's a wonderful chapter about polarity. It shows you ways to improve your characters and their conflicts. Polarity helps engage your readers, increase tension, and helps with that dreaded mid-book slump where the plot can drag.In addition, the author has drawn on all kinds of cross-cultural examples of different elements of any story, fiction and nonfiction alike. Those insights are tremendously useful.Also, this book is so well-organized and broken into headings, you can open the book to almost any page and find something useful for your story. When I read it -- even after all these years -- I discover about three "ah-HA!" ideas on every page.Though this book may be almost overwhelming for beginning writers, it's a book every writer should own. No matter where you are on your writing journey, there's something to learn -- and benefit from -- even if you only read one page (or part of a page) at a time.In addition, the both the table of contents and the subject index at the back of the book are thorough and useful, so you can find what you're looking for, quickly.Every fiction writer (and most nonfiction writers) should own a copy of this book, and browse its pages, regularly. It's that good... and that important, to help you understand your best writing, and bring that to every story.
I have read several books on writing and this is one of the most significant I have found. It is a true gem if you are interested in the Mythic underpinnings of Story as well as the mythic underpinnings of your story as a writer. It is very well-written. It does not preach 'how-to,' or offer method. Instead, it delves into the heart of what 'Makes Story' for us humans by putting the work of Joseph Campbell (The Power of Myth, Hero of a Thousand Faces and more,) and Carl Jung into context for the writer. There are terrific examples of how archetypes propel a story through its arcs with emphasis on the major Jungian archetypes. It challenges you as a writer to understand how myth drives story today. Vogler provides excellent examples of mythic arc as developed screen-plays and novels. Christopher Vogler is a charming and concise writer who makes Jungian mythic theory applicable to all writers. This is not a book of exercises. It is a book to think and construct by. An absolute winner.
I had previously read the Second Edition of Mr. Vogler's excellent book, and this edition offers MUCH more. This is by far the best book for aspiring novelists and screenwriters. It is well-written, east-to-follow, and brilliant in every way. But if you're like I am, you will be underlining and highlighting until you run out of in.
Seriously? I have a major in creative writing and have written two novels and published one so far. I would have to say that if there is only one book that you should read in order to write fiction, this is it. No question about it. No other book I've read in the last forty years (and I have quite a library of writer's manuals) even comes close. If you want to be a writer, this and the Chicago manual of style are all you need. If you have a degree in English, you don't need the manual of style. Just get it.
