Introduction to Modern Climate Change

This is an invaluable textbook for any introductory survey course on the science and policy of climate change, for both non-science majors and introductory science students. The second edition has been thoroughly updated to reflect the most recent science from the latest IPCC reports, and many illustrations include new data. The new edition also reflects advances in the political debate over climate change. Unique amongst textbooks on climate change, it combines an introduction to the science with an introduction to economic and policy issues, and is tightly focused on anthropogenic climate change. It contains the necessary quantitative depth for students to properly understand the science of climate change. It supports students in using algebra to understand simple equations and to solve end of chapter problems. Supplementary online resources include: a complete set of PowerPoint figures for instructors, solutions to exercises, videos of the author's lectures, and additional computer exercises.

You don't believe or not believe in climate change.Belief is similar to religion - that is, faith rather than facts. Andrew Dressler concentrates on the facts and challenges you to consider them just as a court considers the evidence in a trial. No act of belief but rather a consideration of the balance of the evidence. He is not scared to mention unknowns or areas where evidence is still not complete or more is still to be learn. The ideal skeptic outlook yet recognising that even at this stage there is virtually no doubt that climate is changing and pretty powerful evidence that human activity is contributing to that change. Yet as in a court trial always staying open to new evidence, for or against, that may turn up.An excellent and easy to follow book and one I would highly reccomend.

This was a textbook for a class I took, but I still use it as a reference. Great for getting your arms around climate change facts.

This is a good introduction to much of climate science and recommended, but an unsatisfactory introduction to climate change because the author gives a very one-sided view of the scientific uncertainties and controversies. In fact, students would be at a loss to understand why there could be any controversy given Dessler's book. He omits addressing anything that might suggest the inadequacy of his position including the critically important topic of climate sensitivity. His omissions obscure a lot of important differences between so called climate "alarmists" and so-called "luke warmers," the former who emphasize climate models and the ladder who emphasize climate data in discerning the proper level of concern or alarm. Dr. Dessler himself is always civil, but his approach enables those with less understanding on both sides to engage in the uncivil and nasty climate wars that degrade climate science, make finding common ground almost impossible, and thereby make the crafting of responsible energy policy almost impossible. I have been teaching a course in climate science for 5 years and am still searching for an intro to climate science that is balanced, explains that scientific method is important, but difficult for this science, and promotes understanding of why there are differing responsible points of view that should be engaged, not demonized if we are to find the common ground necessary to thoughtfully discuss mitigation and adaptation strategies.

My favorite CC text book I've come across. Does a great job explaining difficult concepts in a simple way for any non-scientist to understand.

Excellent, adequately technical and research-based yet readable, covers the science of climate change then places it in broader economic, social, and political contexts. It was written in 2010-2011 and its forecasts at that time were challenging. With four more years of little to no action on climate change, the situation now is even more daunting. Anyone wanting to get a good introduction to the topic would do well to read this.
